Miniature lighthouses—once you start looking, you’ll find more than you’d ever expect. They stand guard at the edge of suburban driveways, at the entrance to commercial parking lots, along roadsides, and even atop fences. Having nothing to do with maritime navigation, some are nevertheless wired with lights marking access to residences and businesses. More elaborate and expensive than absolutely necessary to signify or illuminate a property, they are a statement by owners to all who pass by.
